Richard Frederick Hoerz was born on May 15, 1965 in Schenectady, NY to parents Richard and Helgard
Hoerz. After a happy childhood in Middleburgh, NY, he joined his mother in South Carolina in 1980.
Richard was curious, funny, considerate, patient, and fun!
And boy, did he know how to have fun! Camping, hiking, biking, whitewater kayaking and rafting – any
given weekend, you’d find him doing at least one. He loved live music, both listening and playing guitar.
He was so much more than words can describe, but ask any of his friends, and you’re sure to hear a
great Richard story.
His love of the outdoors was eclipsed only by his love for his son, Nathaniel Connor Hoerz who passed
away at 13. Richard was an amazing Dad, providing Nate with the love and passion he needed to be the
incredible kid he was. Together, they were the “kayak kings.”
Richard is survived by his girlfriend Amy Garvey and three sisters, Barbara Ellisor, Karen Mann, And Lisa
Colle, and best dog, Saluda. He died at home with Amy and Saluda on June 10, 2023. A memorial service
will soon follow, as will a memorial paddle, organized by lifelong friends Paul & Shannon Schmutzok. In
lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Richard’s favorite charity: Ronan Thompson Foundation.
