Mr. Donald "Weedy" Walker passed away on Friday, July 9, 2021 after an extended illness. A native of Spartanburg, He was the son of the late James and Allie Walker. He graduated from Spartanburg High School and attended Cecil Business College. After leaving Cecil's, Weedy graduated the South Carolina Fire Academy and started his career as a fireman at the Spartanburg City Fire Department. In addition to firefighting, he was was an accomplished carpenter working for Paul K. Lee Builders. Weedy retired from the fire department in 1988 as a distinguished Captain, but never left his true passion, carpentry. He was a member of First Baptist Church Arcadia, and served in the United States Army.
He is survived by: his loving wife, Gail Dunlap Walker of the home; son, Robert E. Knight, Jr. (Sarah) of Spartanburg; daughters, Donna Walker Earle (Danny) and Jennifer Knight Shipman (Shawn), both of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Nicole McGarity, Riley Knight Dobbins, Jayda Shipman, Matthew Knight, Kamden Shipman, Sloan Shipman, Hayden Shipman, Melody Knight, Kendall Campbell, Kristopher Melton and Julie Melton; two great grandchildren; a multitude of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Martha Rook Walker, three brothers, and three sisters.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Fairforest Baptist Church, Fairforest, SC, Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 7pm. The service will be led by Rev. M. Shawn Shipman, Dr. James Hilton, and Rev. Dylan Styles. Honorary Pallbearers are Tommy Willard, Steve Cromer, Randy Coggins, Kamden Shipman, Sloan Shipman, Hayden Shipman, Joe Allen, and Dean Hammett. David Pierce will serve as vocalist.
