Obituary

Spartanburg, SC

John Douglas (Doug) Remeta passed away peacefully at his home in hospice care on December 29, 2025 after battling a long illness from pulmonary fibrosis. His wife of 57 years of marriage, Diane Dennis Remeta, was with him.   Doug was born to two amazing parents, John Remeta and Evelyn Troutman Remeta in Eastern North Carolina. He was the oldest of three boys. Jim Remeta, his younger brother, whom passed away in 2022 and his other younger brother, David whom is still living in Salisbury, North Carolina.

After graduating from East Rowan High School, Doug went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Engineering at North Carolina State University. Doug had a long career in Industrial Engineering, working in both North and South Carolina, assisting in design and layout of industrial facilities and factories. He developed custom designs for machines and production in industrial plants. Doug had a knack for fixing anything. He could fix a car or even custom build a trailer. Later in his career, he used those talents to start his own construction company, Remeta Construction, focusing on remodeling and repair of residential homes. His remodeling work is still admired by clients in Spartanburg.

Doug loved being in nature. He appreciated the quiet of a snowy path or the peace of the ocean waves fishing. Doug would spend all dayand into the night fishing at the ocean or a lake. He caught record breaking fish and he made sure he shared all the fish fillets he caught with neighbors. Doug loved to ski and really enjoyed being in the crisp mountain air. As his passion for skiing grew, he became the President of the Sir Walter Raleigh Ski Club in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1969. He organized many great ski trips to Crested Butte with the club and got to know American ski racing legends like Spyder Sabich. Nothing was more important than family vacations for Doug.  Doug, Diane and daughter Christy were always ready for unique adventures together. He planned and executed trip after trip of either fishing on the ocean or Outer Banks of North Carolina catching Flounders to skiing moguls and powder in Utah, getting himself and Christy lost in the woods, dealing with Volkswagen Beetle sized moguls.  Doug had many hidden talents. He could find an arrowhead whenever he would hike or wander on a dry river bed. Doug was known to make an incredible apple butter and shared with all. He loved woodworking and recently made hand crafted knives. He really loved all the dogs he and Diane owned, and treasured all the time he could spend with them.

Doug is survived by his brother, David Remeta of Salisbury, North Carolina, his wife Diane Dennis Remeta of Spartanburg, SC and his daughter Christy Remeta of Vail, Colorado. Doug will be missed by friends and family alike and will be remembered in a Celebration of Life in the late Spring of 2026.

Doug’s family has asked in lieu of flowers to donate to Small Champions of Colorado, a non profit that transforms and empowers the lives of Eagle County youth who are challenged with a variety of cognitive and physical disabilities, smallchampions.org
