Alvin Abbott Jr., affectionately known to family and friends as "Jr.," passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at the age of 96.

Born on April 19, 1930, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Alvin Otto Abbott and June Abbott, Jr. began a remarkable career in the oil fields at just 17 years old. He was so dedicated to his work that he famously had to take a day off from the drilling rig to attend his own high school graduation. Over the course of his career, he worked on drilling rigs throughout West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Oklahoma, and even spent time working in Cuba. Through determination, hard work, and an entrepreneurial spirit, he achieved one of his proudest accomplishments by becoming his own boss and founding JR Drilling Company in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, where he worked until his retirement.

Jr. was known as a man who could fix nearly anything. He had a gift for solving problems, repairing equipment, and finding innovative ways to get a job done. He took great pride in his independence, his work ethic, and the life he built through perseverance.

After retirement, he found joy in building furniture with his own hands and spending time with his grandchildren, especially taking them to yard sales in search of hidden treasures. Those simple moments became treasured memories for his family.

Later in life, Jr. accepted Christ as his Savior and found great comfort in reading the Bible. His faith became an important part of his life and brought him peace.

Above all else, Jr. loved his family. He was immensely proud of his beloved wife, Vonda, whom he loved deeply throughout their life together. He celebrated the accomplishments of his children and often expressed how proud he was of the intelligence, character, and success of his grandchildren. Nothing brought him greater happiness than watching his family grow and thrive.

Jr. was also a gifted storyteller. Whether around the dinner table or during family gatherings, he loved sharing stories from his extraordinary life—stories that were told again and again until every member of the family knew them by heart. Those stories, along with his humor, wisdom, and larger-than-life personality, will continue to be passed down for generations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Otto Abbott and June Abbott; his daughter, Pamela Prell; his sister, LaNell Louton; and his brother, Lemuel Abbott.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Vonda Abbott; his daughters, Barbara Gray and her husband, Dave, Vicki Filipovich and her husband, Joe, and Cheryl Clawser and her husband, Mike, Rebecca Smith; his son, Alvin Ray Abbott and his wife, Leslie; his sisters, Sarah Brinnon and Patsy Payne; his grandchildren, Stacy Fisher, Melanie Johnson and her husband, Steve, Jennie McDonald and her husband, Jason, Scott Smith and his wife, Michelle, George Basista and his wife, Racheal, Sean Abbott, and Halle Abbott; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends.

There was only one Alvin Abbott Jr. He built a life through grit, determination, faith, and love for his family. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the stories he shared, the things he built, and the generations who were blessed to know him.

As his family, we are proud and humbled to have called him our father. We will forever be grateful for the time we had with him, and we know his memory will continue to live in all of us who loved him.
